There’s No One Dream Job - And That’s a Good Thing
As a career transition coach, I work with professionals who are ready for a change. Often, they’re stuck in roles that no longer resonate with them. Maybe they’re feeling undervalued, exhausted, or just plain bored. Sometimes, they’ve been unhappy for years. And like many of my clients, they come in hoping to find the dream job—the perfect role that will make everything click.
Here’s the thing: I don’t believe there’s only one right job out there for you. In fact, there are many jobs that could be a great fit. Working with a career coach doesn’t mean you’ll land the “dream job” right away—it means we’ll get clear on your next best step, one that aligns with your values, interests, and life situation.
One framework I return to again and again with clients is something I learned from fellow career coach Lesa Edwards (thank you, Lesa!)—the Bullseye Analogy.
The Bullseye Analogy
Imagine a target with a bullseye in the center. That center represents your “ideal” job—or more realistically, a set of ideal jobs. Roles that closely align with who you are, what you care about, and how you want to live and work.
Now, imagine being fresh out of college and aiming at that target. How likely is it that you’ll hit the center on the first try? Pretty unlikely. At that stage, you’re still figuring out what matters to you, how you work best, and what kind of environments allow you to thrive.
That’s why this analogy is so powerful:
You don’t have to hit the center on your first shot.
Just getting on the board—somewhere on the bullseye—is a win.
And most importantly: the center itself moves over time.
What felt like the “perfect” job ten years ago might no longer fit. You grow. You learn. Your priorities shift. And so does your version of meaningful work. The goal is not to chase a static, one-time “dream job,” but rather to stay in alignment with your evolving self.
One Step Closer
My job as a coach is to help you take that next right step—the one that reflects who you are now. Through honest exploration and practical research, you can find a role that’s more aligned, more fulfilling, and more “you” than the one before.
