Networking: Don't Wait Until You're Burned Out

In my 15+ years in human resources, and now as a career transition coach, I’ve seen many people who feel unhappy in their jobs, but they keep pushing through.

They tell themselves it’s not that bad. They don’t have the energy to figure out what’s next. Maybe they worry that making a change is too risky.

And then, one day, they hit a wall. They can’t imagine sitting through one more Monday morning meeting. The thought of updating a resume or scanning job boards feels overwhelming and suddenly very urgent.

That’s when networking can feel the most uncomfortable. Because now, it feels like every conversation has to lead to a job.

But that’s not what your network is for.

Your network is for Advice, Information, and Resources (AIR). It’s for guidance and ideas. It’s for relationships that help you grow and think differently.

But that kind of support takes time to cultivate.

So if your current job isn’t quite working for you, here’s my gentle encouragement: don’t wait.

Don’t wait until you’re burned out or desperate. If there’s a quiet sense of dissatisfaction, listen to it. Explore it now, while you still have energy and curiosity.

Maybe a small shift, like moving to a new team internally, could help. Or maybe you’re on the edge of a larger transition. Either way, give yourself time. And give your network time.

Because when you reach out from a place of curiosity instead of crisis, you’re far more likely to have honest, generous conversations that can support your next steps.

Networking is a marathon, not a sprint. So start walking now, before it feels like you’re running on empty. You don’t need all the answers yet. You just need to begin the conversation.
